March 6, 2026Today the Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission (INMACOM) launched the VUNWE programme funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The four-year (2026-2029) program is funded by the Netherlands Embassy with a total allocation of €2 million for INMACOM.
VUNWE is used as the acronym for “Vitalizing, Unifying, Neighboring Water Management Empowerment”. This Integrated Program will support two transboundary river basin commissions, INMACOM and BUPUSACOM, in Southern Africa. It is facilitated by a consortium of five regional and international water organizations led by IHE Delft and financially supported by the Embassy of The Netherlands in Maputo.
The program is designed to enhance the institutional capacity of INMACOM and BUPUSACOM, fostering a unified and coordinated approach among Member States.
The program strives to strengthen the institution from commission to Task Teams and the Secretariat. Further focus is on information management for water use and disaster management, the role of the commissions in development of infrastructure with transboundary impacts and disaster management. Where it suits the above objectives, policy harmonization is also a focus for coordinated basin management.
Through this initiative INMACOM aims to advance pending transboundary water management priorities outlined in its 2023-2027 Strategic Financial Sustainability Plan.
