This week, INMACOM joined Komati Basin Water Authority, the Mpumalanga Fisheries Department, and local partners on a knowledge-sharing mission to the EATtFresh aquaponics farm near Acornhoek, Mpumalanga. This innovative, youth-led project integrates tilapia farming with hydroponic vegetable production, showcasing a climate smart, circular agriculture model that uses just 10% of the water required by conventional farming.
The purpose of this benchmarking exercise is to explore the introduction of this pioneering aquaponics model at Maguga Dam, with the aim of strengthening food security, empowering local communities, and promoting sustainable water smart agriculture.
Key Highlights from the Visit:
- Ecosystem impact: Fish waste is recycled to fertilize crops, reducing nutrient runoff and conserving scarce water resources.
- Livelihoods: Youth and women are at the forefront, gaining skills and income through training and out-grower schemes.
- Outputs: An aquaponics facility powered by solar energy, producing fresh fish and vegetables year-round.
- Governance: Strong collaboration between government, NGOs, and local communities, aligning with INMACOM’s transboundary water management goals.
- Market potential: Supplying eco-tourism and local retailers with premium organic produce.
This benchmarking exercise confirmed that aquaponics can strengthen food
security, empower communities, and protect ecosystems. Lessons learned will inform Eswatini’s upcoming aquaculture initiatives, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and shared benefits across the Incomati–Maputo basin.
