The Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission (INMACOM) and The Association for Water and Rural Development (AWARD) are co-hosting a pivotal meeting that brings together more than 50 stakeholders, including Commissioners from Member States and project teams to advance freshwater biodiversity management in the trans-boundary Incomati River Basin.
AWARD, a South African non-profit organization and is dedicated to research-based, participatory, and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainable natural resource management, with a strong focus on water, biodiversity, and climate change in rural areas.
This meeting is made possible through:
BIO-SMART2 Project (Biodiversity Systems Management and Analytics for the Restoration of Trans-boundary Rivers), funded by JRS Biodiversity Foundation. Led by AWARD in partnership with WWF Mozambique, the Freshwater Research Centre (FRC), Charles Sturt University, and Rivers of Life, the project (Feb 2025–Feb 2027) enhances biodiversity data accessibility, fosters cross-border collaboration, and strengthens regional conservation capacity.
UNDP Eswatini UNDP/GEF8 INMACOM Project (“Strengthening integrated trans-boundary management of the Incomati and Maputo River Basins”), which supports integrated management and collaboration around aquatic biodiversity.
A highlight of these efforts is the Trans-boundary Biodiversity Learning Network (TBLN), launched in Macaneta, Mozambique, in June 2025, creating a platform for shared learning and regional cooperation.
