Strengthening collaboration for freshwater biodiversity in Southern Africa
February 18, 2026Today we were honored to host a media breakfast meeting where we showcased our vital role in managing trans-boundary water resources across the Incomati and Maputo river basins. Among the key stakeholders presenting were: Komati Basin Water Authority ; Joint Rivers Basin Authorities – Project Board; National Disaster Risk Management Authority Eswatini Department of Water Affairs
During the session, we highlighted Member States Contributions of E10.8 million annually; Co‑financing of projects exceeding USD $64 million from governments, partners, and stakeholders; The GEF investment of over USD $7.1 million, implemented through UNDP Eswatini with strong institutional backing from INMACOM and regional partners (Global Water Partnership Southern Africa.
Our Executive Secretary also emphasized the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mozambique, which has provided €2 million for a pivotal four‑year programme. This Dutch‑supported VUNWE Integrated Trans-boundary Water Management Programme is advancing collaboration between INMACOM and BUPUSACOM (Buzi, Pungwe and Save Watercourses Commission), with technical support from the IHE Delft Consortium. This investment empowers us to advance strategic initiatives; enhance trans-boundary collaboration; build resilience in water governance frameworks.
Together with our partners and Member States, we remain committed to securing a sustainable water future for the region.

Our collaborative approach strengthens institutional capacity and promotes shared solutions to complex water challenges, including climate change impacts and disaster management.
